A cheap sketchbook saved my art practice. The paper warps, the paint bleeds, and I hate it. I also use it all the time because when I ruin a page, I haven't lost much, and my inner critic has no fuel. I used to be paralyzed by the cost of supplies and the pressure to justify their use. Cheap paper completely removed that barrier. Now I make rough art, sometimes using highlighters, and I've created more in the past few months than I did in the previous two years. I have a folder on my computer called "Stuff to Learn" that I haven't opened in eight months. It has 31 items in it. Webinar replays, free guides, a worksheet about my "ideal client" that I filled out exactly halfway through and then abandoned. All very organized. None of it was useful. For a long time, I thought I was being responsible. Getting ready. Building a foundation. But I was just hiding. I'm five months into an art business mentorship program, and part of that is getting my illustrations onto physical products I sell myself. A refrigerator magnet sample arrived today. I held it for about four seconds before I saw that it'll stick to your fridge, and that's where its ambitions end. It's not holding a grocery list, a postcard, or a takeout menu, which is pretty much the entire job description of a refrigerator magnet. I've been making art my whole life, and nobody encouraged it. So I learned to make myself small and useful in other ways. This is the first time I've had the space to make art seriously, sell it honestly, and find out what I'm capable of as an artist. The search for a refrigerator magnet worth selling continues.

In 2017, I sold my house, crammed my life into a motorhome, and hauled ass from Indiana to Tucson. One casualty was studio space. My art zone went from a whole-ass room to whatever corner of the motorhome I could wrestle away from the rest of my crap. Ruthless supply cuts were made. Over time, I figured out the difference between what I need (a small palette, paper that fits in a drawer, brushes I can roll up and throw in a bag) and what I thought I needed (seventeen brush sizes, every color of paint ever made, and one of those fancy wooden easels that makes you look like a “real” artist). Now the whole kit fits in a packing cube the size of a chihuahua and works pretty much anywhere I plop my ass. Save this for the next time you want to pack light and not turn bringing art supplies into a full-blown circus. Hiding your weird is a full-time gig with a terrible benefits package. I did that for most of my life because being weird wasn’t safe. But I’ve now transitioned to a strict weirding people in, not out policy. The paperwork took 30-something years, but it’s signed, stamped, laminated, and looks more official than my high school diploma.
